Description
If you're looking for a remote and peaceful place to camp, the dispersed campsite off the dirt road towards the southern side of Canyons of the Ancients might be just what you're looking for. This campsite offers a large solitary boulder next to a primitive stone fire ring, and enough room for two or three vehicles. Although the road in from the south is rough, it is accessible by car. Additionally, this location has poor cell service, but offers a great view of the sky for Starlink.
While there isn't much vegetation in the area, the sweeping views of the valley to the east make up for this. The Canyons of the Ancients is a vast National Monument managed by the BLM that is dotted with ruins of past civilizations. This natural landscape has archeological significance, and offers many wonderful hiking opportunities. The area also features a vast primitive road network that is worthy of four-wheel drive exploration.
It's worth noting that while this campsite is right off the main thoroughfare, it does not see too much traffic, which provides moderate privacy. However, there is no shade or protection from the elements, so be sure to bring appropriate gear and be prepared for any weather conditions. Overall, this is an excellent spot for those who want to enjoy the natural beauty and history of the Canyons of the Ancients.
Always tread lightly, leave no trace, respect the wishes of landowners, and leave campsites cleaner than you found them. Be the very best steward of our public spaces that you can possibly be so that they remain public.
