Forest Service Camping North of Yellowstone

Description

This is a small, free Forest Service campground in Custer Gallatin National Forest, just a stone's throw north of Yellowstone. We're talking high-elevation territory, with picnic tables, fire rings, and an outhouse to cover your basics. Fairly remote, so don't expect a lot of folks dropping by, but you better watch out for bears—there are plenty of signs letting you know they're around.

In winter? Forget about it. The elevation, snow, and seasonal closures make this spot nearly impossible to reach. It's tucked away in a wooded area next to a clearing, offering a solid place to relax for a couple of nights. If you're planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park, this is a sweet spot to set up before or after your visit, as long as the weather cooperates.

There's enough room for multiple vehicles, but don't go looking for cell service—there ain't any. Satellite connectivity could be an option if you get past the tree line. This campground is a good choice if you're in the area and want to get off the beaten path. Recommended for those who like their camping with a bit of wild edge. Just remember to keep an eye out for those bears, okay?

Always tread lightly, leave no trace, respect the wishes of landowners, and leave campsites cleaner than you found them. Be the very best steward of our public spaces that you can possibly be so that they remain public.

Status – OPEN

We’ve been here in-person, but it might have been a while. To our knowledge, this spot is currently open and accessible, but that can easily change, so always have a back-up plan!
